Ninjas trying to be ninjas but not really.

Summary

Naruto is an anime and manga made by Masashi Kishimoto that follows a ninja named Naruto Uzumaki. Naruto is part of the "Holy Shōnen Trinity", a term for the three most popular shōnen(action) anime and probably most popular overall anime, sharing the trinity with Bleach and One Piece. Of the three, Naruto probably has the largest and cult-iest fanbase of aspiring Weeaboos, at least in countries outside of Japan. On the other hand, the series is hated by the more hardcore otaku nerds who see the show as generic, entry-level, shōnen schlock. This is not an unfounded opinion.

Typical Narutard

The fans themselves are known as "Narutards". This is do to their particular weeaboo-ness, furry-ness, and annoying-ness. The evidence exists all over from DeviantART to Youtube, and from the 400,000 fanfics on Fanfiction.net to your local anime club. All it takes to find it is a quick google, Youtube, or DeviantART search. While they have provided lulz from time to time, the Narutards have largely stuck with being completely unbearable.

Such fury is there for the Narutard and Naruto that a single thread on /a/ can send everyone into an angry, fermenting mass of hate. This is not even exclusive for /a/, and can be done on any anime forum with ease.

Naruto manga and anime

The first 220 episodes of Naruto are simply known as Part I, or Naruto. Any episode afterwards is a part of Part II called Naruto Shippuden. While the actual plot of Naruto ends at episode 142, there are 88 episodes of filler called by fans as the "Filler Hell Arc" for obvious reasons while Kishimoto was writing the Shippuden manga.

Naruto

The show follows the adventures of Naruto Uzumaki, who has a rampaging 9-Tailed Beast locked inside of him by his father the Fourth Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village. Naruto grows up ostracized and parentless, as Naruto's parents were killed by the Tailed Beast and villagers consider Naruto cursed, hoping to one day become Hokage so he can prove himself to his village. Naruto is joined by large cast of ninjas with similar dreams who all must complete missions in order to rise up the ranks. As is with any shōnen anime, Naruto has a rival in Sasuke Uchiha. Sasuke Uchiha also grew up parentless as his family and clan was killed by Sasuke's brother, Itachi Uchiha, and now seeks revenge on Itachi. Due to the two's intense rivalry, most fanfiction centers around this and their possible relationship.

OMG SASUKE IS SO HOT!!

As the show progresses, Naruto and friends meet rouge ninja and ex-Akatsuki member (a group of powerful rogue ninjas) named Orochimaru. Orochimaru curses Sasuke Uchiha so he can use his nubile young body for his own when Orochimaru's current one wears out, telling Sasuke he can give him the power to kill the Akatsuki member Itachi. This would allow Orochimaru to access the Uchiha's clan powerful abilities and hopefully destroy the Hidden Leaf Village for his own personal vendetta. At it's end, Sasuke and Naruto fight ending with Sasuke leaving the village as a rogue ninja to join Orochimaru.

Naruto Shippuden

Shippuden takes place two-and-a-half years after the end of Part I. In between that time Naruto has been under intense training so he can bring Sasuke back, forgetting his dream of Hokage. In fact, it now becomes everyone's goal to bring Sasuke while at the same time dismantling Akatsuki, as Sasuke becomes centerpiece to the story. Not that it really matters. Remember all those characters introduced in Part I? Forget them. Shippuden often only uses characters once before throwing them off to the side to never be used, save for a precious few like Sasuke. A strange decision as it was the only reason people liked the show in the first place.

Orochimaru is preparing Sasuke to become Orochimaru's new vessel. Sasuke, of course, rejects and kills Orochimaru before killing Itachi. After the battle with Itachi, Sasuke meets new Akatsuki member Tobi, who reveals himself to be Madara Uchiha, the found of the Uchiha Clan, Akatsuki, and co-founder of the Hidden Leaf Village.

A quick summary of the latest chapters.

Madara then asks Sasuke to join Akatsuki. Sasuke remembers Itachi very strongly telling him to not to hold a grudge against the Hidden Leaf and to not trust Madara, as Madara and the Hidden Leaf trained Itachi to kill the Uchiha clan to protect the village from an Uchiha coup. Sasuke quickly ignores this, and joins "Akatsuki".

Madara disbands Akatsuki and reveals his true intentions. Madara wants to use all the Tailed Beast so he can revive the Ten-Tailed Beast whose corpse is encased by the moon and use the moon as a mirror to mind control everyone, there by taking over the world. Madara then declares war on all five countries before leaving. Since then, Madara has gotten stupidly powerful gaining the power of imagination by taking a ninja's eyes along with gaining a clone army, and Naruto has reached Super Saiyan level.

It's anyone's guess when this drivel will end.

Memes

Naruto created to very minor memes with Dramatic Entry and, "Believe It!" The latter isn't even considered a meme, but is often parodied.

Origins

Naruto is based off of a one shot in Akamaru Jump which was illustrated and written by Masashi Kishimoto. Due to strong polling and feedback, Kishimoto began making more chapters in Weekly Shōnen Jump where it was popularly received in Japan. It was adopted in an anime in October 3, 2002 by Aniplex and Studio Pierrot, where it began it's intense popularity abroad.

Current status

Shippuden still goes on with the newest subbed Japanese episodes being uploaded to Cruchyroll and Hulu, as well as new chapters being produced for the manga. Shippuden has been dubbed (poorly) for English speaking audiences on Disney XD.
