- Discovered On: LOL-COMICS!
Summary
Nyan Cat, a.k.a Pop Tart Cat, is an 8 bit animated GIF of a cat flying in a Pop Tart, leaving behind a rainbow as it flies.
Origins
- On April 2, 2011, Chris Torres (PRGuitarman) posted the original animated gif on LOL-COMICS, a comics site. Torres' drew inspiration from his own Russian Blue cat, Marty.
- On April 5, 2011, "saraj00n" posted a YouTube video of the image, set to Daniwell Aidn's UTAU song Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya. A popular theme on Japanese video sharing site Nico Nico Douga is to set anime figures bobbing to the song, which was uploaded January 31, 2010.
- Sometime afterward, Huy Hong created the Nyan Cat website, essentially a loop of Nyan Cat with Daniwell Aidn’s Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya.
Well, first of all, the actual cat itself is based off my own Russian Blue, named Marty (from Back to the Future) I love drawing cat comics on my site and wanted to do a special animated sprite similar to the one here The night before I posted it, I was doing a Red Cross charity drawing Livestream and asked a few people what they wanted. One person said "Cat" and the other said "Pop Tart!" so I combined the two and came up with this That night I pixelated it because I wanted it as an avatar. Posted it online without a second thought. A few days later I got word it was on Youtube and it exploded from there!
Current status
In just over three months, the YouTube video gained more than 25 million views. By November, 2011, the video had 50 million views.
Nyan Cat drama
Huy Hong and Chris Torres currently dispute the origins of the meme, with Hong claiming responsibility for the meme's popularity, and Torres claiming that Hong is "SINGLE HANDEDLY STEALING THE WORK OF OTHERS", proving, once again, that internet cats are serious business.
Fake DMCA filed
The original video was off YouTube on the morning of June 28, 2011, but it got put back up that afternoon. It turned out that someone had filed a fake DMCA against the video, claiming to be Torres. This resulted in RAGE from fans, and prompted this blog post from him, and he successfully counter-filed against the DMCA claim.
