Summary
Of all the modern anime, there is little that compares to the popularity of One Piece. Part of the "Holy Shōnen(action) Trinity" with Naruto with Bleach, it is the largest, longest (600 + chapters), most popular, and arguably the best of the three. To give an idea of the popularity, One Piece is more popular than sex in Japan, selling more than Harry Potter. Overseas... not some much. Naruto holds the overseas popularity title.
You might be asking yourself, how exactly does a manga continue on for 600 + chapters? The answer is, it really doesn't. The main point of the comic is for the main characters (who are pirates) to cross a mountain range known as the Red Line, which splits the world in half. On the other side is the New World, where One Piece lies, which is the treasure to end all treasures. Despite the characters having found the Red Line, found an entrance on the ocean belt known as the Grand Line, and even briefly crossed it only to go back, they have yet to cross it with a ship. Instead, they get involved with wars and such on the Grand Line, forever perpetuating the comic.
4Kids
Around the time Naruto and Bleach were getting popular, dub companies had the obvious idea of bringing One Piece overseas. The problem was, that 4Kids got the rights to One Piece, who dubbed Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! for America. The results were horrible. erasing everything from the original show, replacing voice actors with terrible voice actors, changing black people into white people, getting rid off guns, blood, gore, and the slightest sexual reference. One Piece, having the large fanbase it has, were now a seething mass of pure hate. Hate all directed to 4Kids. Since 4Kids did such a horrible job with the dub, One Piece failed overseas and gained little audience. And despite the dub now properly being done by FUNimation, fans still won't let this go, and call 4Kids OMG THE MOST UN~KAWAII COMPANY EVER!!!!1!
Fansub
Due to the failure of One Piece, it no longer airs overseas on TV (at least in America). This caused numerous fansubs to sprout, angering FUNimation who were currently dubbing it. FUNimation then brought copyright infringement to people who downloaded the episodes and published the episodes. And nothing came out of this.
Origins
Made by Eiichiro Oda, Oda always had success as a manga artist, winning several competitions that eventually got him a job at Shonen Jump. Oda worked as an assistant and assistant artist on several manga, such as Rurouni Kenshin. During this time, Oda released two one shots called Romance Dawn which starred the protagonist of One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy. Oda eventually made Romance Dawn into a full on manga.
