Summary
Sexting refers to sending explicit photographs of oneself to another person by an internet-connected cell phone.
Sexting can lead to humiliation and blackmail. Let's say you want to send a sweet something to John, because he's your super duper boyfriend. But what if he's a jerk and he decides to send that photo to all of his friends? Nothing can stop him from doing so. Or what if somebody steals his phone and copies all of its contents, including your photo, to his hard drive, and then shares the stuff with his friends? Or you have a less than amicable breakup with John and he gets furious?
Then what? In all three scenarios, the whole would could have your picture. You thought only John would see your intimate photo, but instead everybody, from your teachers, to your classmates, to your parents and family, to a sheikh in Dubai could view and save it. Also, sexting pics can also be used as a form of blackmail against you, by John or by a third party.
Sexting is very popular among high school aged teenagers. If children are the future, that doesn't reflect too highly on the development on human society. Some government authorities prosecute people involved in sexting, because the images are those of minors. Some people who faced harassment after their photographs were distributed committed suicide.
Origins
Sexting became possible when internet connections became more robust and cell phones gained the ability to double as cameras.
Current status
Still active.
