Summary
Shock sites are typically simple websites featuring offensive imagery, most often pornography or gore, that are used to gross out or offend the recipient of the link. Users are led to click a seemingly innocuous link, only to find something disgusting on their screens. In some cases the images are accompanied with loud noises or music, or are Flash files that hijack a browser and prevent the user from closing it easily.
Origins
Shock sites have existed on the web since at least the mid- to late 90s.
Current status
New shock sites appear with some regularity, as the internet is a never-ending cesspool of vile and horrific things.
