Summary

Social Engineering is a term which is often used as a technique in which Person A exploits Item B mentally in order to gain access to normally secure information. Social Engineering is as old as humanity itself but is often used on the internet simply because anyone can become anything (e.g. Person A (18 year old male claiming to be a fourteen year old female) exploits Item B's (30 year old pedophile) desire for cp. Item B downloads the "cp", and now is infected by a trojan.

Social Engineering is also used IRL/Internet combos. If Person A exploits the ethernet plug in Item B (Let's say it's a restraunt) then Person A may be able to gain sensitive information if he or she has the software knowledge.

Social Engineering in it's simplest form may come in befriending a person to gain escalated privileges on a site When it comes to having their system compromised, a company should be more worried about people who know important information like passwords giving them out to people who shouldn't have them than anything else.

Lie To Me is a television series which is based on this concept.
