| Has origin | In the medieval era, Japan was a series of … In the medieval era, Japan was a series of warring states, held loosely together by a military general (known as a shogun) and an Emperor. That is, when they weren't dead. Eventually the Tokugawa shogunate unified the country and ruled it for around 300 years. During these years, Japan was very hostile to outside states, not even trading with the outside world, and it was here Japan developed much of its unique culture. The [[United States]]'s Commodore Perry forced Japan to open itself to outside influences in 1853. The Tokugawas lost power and the imperialistic Meiji government appeared. Japan began to industrialize and westernize, eventually to the point where they defeated [[Russia]]. Japan fought for the Allies in World War I, but felt it was not given enough credit for its efforts. In World War II Japan fought for the Axis, invading the Pacific islands and coasts. The United States defeated Japan by dropping a two nukes on Japan, and in the rebuilding process/foreign occupation Japan gained a tech economy. As the information age came to be, modern Japanese popular culture, including [[anime]], manga, and [[video game]]s appeared. When anime and manga became really popular in the west, the conventions of anime and manga seeped into western internet culture.
