He is usually posted on 4chan when someone asks for or posts a child related picture. In the near decade since Kuma's original creation, there has been some confusion as to his origin. On 2ch, Kuma had no pedophilic associations, he was merely ASCII art. A mirror of the first Kuma post is at [http://2se.dyndns.org/test/readc.cgi/aa.2ch.net_kao_1046353580/ this 2ch archive mirror], suggesting Kuma was first "drawn" in July of 2003. Kuma was often used in what is referred to as "fishing" threads, meaning threads fishing for attention and/or replies. The ASCII was used to suggest the replier was not going to take the bait, or to point out how obvious the thread was. In the early days of [[4chan]] and [[b/|/b/]] especially, there was some overlap from [[2ch]].
