"Science" has existed as a comedy meme lon … "Science" has existed as a comedy meme long before it was picked up by the internet. It fits with too many standard comedy tropes to ignore; for example, using material which takes itself ultra-seriously and inserting absurdities has been a staple of British comedy since Monty Python, and radio shows like The Goon Show and Round The Horne before that.
The internet was already doing science with material like [[XKCD]] and the [[Weebl and Bob|Weebl]] flash animation "Science" when the meme was codified in 2007 by the game [[Portal]]. Portal leaned heavily on catchphrases like "I'm doing science!" which both appealed to the collective hivemind's sense of humour and inserted a healthy dose of the black humour, [[Delicious cake|meme references]] and creeping misogyny so beloved of /b/tards. creeping misogyny so beloved of /b/tards.
